Harnessing the power of remote education to upskill a new generation of tradespeople.

Economists expect over 45 million existing jobs in the U.S. to be automated by 2033. However, even as some job-market sectors are shrinking, others are in desperate need of skilled workers—sectors like the flexible and high-paying field of appliance repair.

At his startup, Nana Academy, Israeli-born entrepreneur David Zamir is training a new generation of appliance technicians to help meet that high demand through free, online training courses that cover topics like tools, safety, electricity, and specific appliance types. After completing a beginner’s course (or a more-extensive “boot camp” on appliance repair), Nana trainees can access economic opportunities from leading manufacturers and home warranty companies. Since 2017, Nana has enrolled more than 8,000 students in five states and 24 cities.

For generations, the appliance-repair profession has paid strong wages and enabled many Americans to establish livelihoods and support their families. Zamir and the team at Nana are eager to help evolve the trade for a new generation, and pave the way for millions of good jobs—all while extending the lifespans of appliances and helping create a more sustainable world in which fewer machines are thrown away.
